Something for you!

Wow, that was an amazing response to 'A Toy Society Christmas' I'm still responding to the huge number of sign ups and I've got so many amazing stories to share with you all and I can't wait to start putting locations on the map!

But for now, I have something I'd like to give to you (well two people).

Back when I started The Toy Society lovely Angela contacted me and sent me some of her gorgeous, simple, totally inspired Miss Buttons sewing patterns.

If you would like to win your very own cute-as-a-button Miss Buttons pattern please leave a comment (by midnight 3rd December Australian Eastern Standard time) with an idea for something new The Toy Society can do in 2009. Something new to add to the blog, a new world-wide drop theme, a new blog that Toy Society readers would love, something you've thought all along that The Toy Society should do. Whatever you like, just be in it to win it!

Who wouldn't their very own Miss Buttons. It looks like a great pattern!!

My suggestion for the Toy Society is hosting a few "group drops" in major cities. Gals could get together first for a chat and coffee bringing a toy, if they like. Then as a group they could plot out a course to drop their goodies. It'd be a great way to explore new areas and have a healthy stroll!

I would love that pattern!!
I think there should be monthly group drops, like the Christmas one comming up.

I think it would be wonderful to do a worldwide drop on the same day, in a common location (something general but similar, like a park, the beach, a coffeeshop, whatever). It would be so unifying and magical.

How about a local charity drop? We knitted for City Mission and asked that instead of being sold the scarves went to those in need. They were very grateful.

I have no great idea so please don't enter me but am loving the above comment about 'Toy Society International Drop Day.'

What about "Operation Jumbo Drop"? Where everyone drops elephant softies. No particular reason, I just like the name :)

What about a worldwide SWAP & DROP? We could each pair up with a partner, make a softy, send it across the world for it to be dropped in a foreign city. I like the idea of one of my little softies making their way across the world, perhaps climbing the eiffel tower or sipping cafe latte in Roma!

Another idea is a online auction of toys with proceeds going to a charity. Perhaps a Christmas softy competition (2009) with winners and prizes, and then the softies can be auctioned off with proceeds going to the winner's choice of charities.

I'll try and think of more...

Great ideas so far! I like the "Jumbo Drop" theme. I think themed drops once a month would be fun. "Its a Jungle out there"- all jungle animals one month.

How about a once-a-week/month/season/whenever drop where everyone who wants to be involved uses the same pattern to make a softie, and they're all dropped on the same day - loads of variations of the same softie. It would be fun to see how different they all turn out and where they end up! Someone new could be nominated to provide a pattern each time; or another version could be to have a theme for a drop, such as a particular colour, material, size, animal etc...

I also think it'd be really fun to attach a dozen or so helium balloons to a toy and let it fly away and see where it ends up. It's not really a practical idea since it could land ANYWHERE (on top of a skyscraper, stuck in a tree, in the river...)but I think it would be fun.

I am LOVING all the ideas so far. I've found several new free patterns we could all use -

+ more but I'll send the links to you later.

Also what about a fabric grocery bag drop? Let's make the world fantastic by eliminating plastic! All you need is a nice patterned sheet from a thrift store (not too old) and you can get 5 to 9 bags from it. Then drop them at different locations. Who knows? You might see them out shopping!

Don't enter me in the draw - I already have the pattern! but one of the things I would love to do in my town is have a group of us in the same town make the same toy, perhaps in a workshop, or as an online sew-a-long. Then at the same time on the same day, we go out to our local shops or gathering places and bombard the town with toys from the Toy Society!

I also like the idea of using 'agents' in other cities. I reckon my sister-in-law would be keen to drop some more toys in Brisbane if I sent them to her.

I love the idea of a ‘worldwide SWAP & DROP’ mentioned by Lin.

And also the idea of making the same pattern and themed patterns are great. I like seeing the variations folks come up with :)

I like the idea of dropping toy making kits. I know it’s not really a ‘toy’ drop. Say cutting out a simple pattern in fabric and then including everything someone would need in order to make their toy (pre-cut fabric pattern, some stuffing, thread etc.) and some instructions. This way you can pass on the toy making bug, not just the toys.

I'm all set for the drop. My little friend even has a scarf, because it's probably going to be full of snow around here.

as for a suggestion, I would love to have group drops done in less-fortunate area. Maybe a bunch of people could make toys and send them to one person, who would go do a drop in front of a school or program for youth

How about coming up with a curriculum that teachers could download and use in their classrooms to spread the Toy Society Love! I am going to my daughters 3rd grade class today to begin a month long project inspired by your blog.... the kids are creating their own softies and over the Christmas Holidays they will be "dropping" them off in a public locale with a note etc....

These are all terrific ideas! I was thinking that maybe we could set up a drop for retirement/nursing homes. There are a lot of lonely people there that could use some cheerful toys!

I like the idea of themed drops, especially if one of the themes is making the toys out of recycled materials.

cute little miss Buttons!!

Drop themes sound fun! What about location themes (i.e. a bus stop drop. or a public stair case drop!)

I'm just learning and loving what the toy society is! What a fabulous idea and I want to be a part of it, sounds like alot of fun! Some wonderful ideas, I especially like the global drop one where we all do one on the same day or the Operation Jumbo Drop.

hi , what about a addoption certificate that goes with the toy.
and what i think is also a good idea is drops in hospitals, i know out of experience that things like this can bring a big smile on a hopitalized kid.. and the smile is what we do it for.......

She is one cute dolly, and I am sure there are plenty of unsuspecting out there who would like to find her in their neighbourhood.
I like all that is happening here so far. I am thinking that maybe some of the finders would like to send a note or card by snail mail rather than email, so why not include an address for them to send to on the drop tag.

well, since this is on patterns, i know a lot of sites have patterns and charge money for them. i think we should add something for members to post up patterns to share with other members!

I think the idea of themed swaps sounds fun. It would be interesting to see how many different versions you would get for each swap. Maybe if we did an animal swap, such as an elephant, we could all drop at a zoo or animal farm. If we did a dog, maybe outside a vet? If its a pig we could even do it outside a butcher =P

i think the toy society should become more directed.
leave a collection of toys at underpriveliged pre-shcool one night, or on the doorstep of a disabled care facility.

I can't help but cringe at the thought of some not-so-nice people finding the toys defacing and discarding them. Does that ever happen?

talia said...

Wow, there are so many great ideas on here :) Haha, now I want to go do them all! I think it'd be neat to organize some kind of drop (or maybe just a giveaway would be more practical, I don't know) at everyone's local food pantry.
